Controlling Interest, #35
Original air date: January 26, 2004
The scoop: Andy's relationship with Linda heats up; Bright has a confrontation with Tommy; Ephram wants to be seen with Madison.

What's Up With Amy: Edna's husband, Irv, is having a hard time adjusting to having Amy live with them. Amy doesn't realize that just because her grandparents are old doesn't mean they don't need their privacy. She learns that disturbing lesson when she walks in on them while they're alone in their bedroom. Irv encourages Edna to lay down more rules for Amy. Instead Edna buys Amy her own telephone line so she won't have to keep pestering them for the phone. Meanwhile, Amy makes several attempts to ask Bright about how he and their parents are doing. Bright is so upset with the effect Amy's had on their family that he continuously ignores her. Until they run into each other at the high school wrestling match. Tommy approaches Bright, telling him that he's being too hard on Amy. Although Bright warns him to be quiet, Tommy says one word too many and Bright punches him. The two end up fighting and Bright's the one to suffer consequences because Tommy no longer attends the school. Although Amy feels guilty about the troubles she's causing, she's sure that choosing Tommy over her family (because, she claims, they left her no choice) was the right decision; and Tommy is glad to have been the chosen one.

What's Up With Andy: As Andy and Linda spend more time together, they are also getting physically closer until they reach the point of no return when Andy stops everything and runs. He begins to bury himself in his work and when Linda calls him on it Andy becomes angry and mistakenly calls her "Julia", the name of his dead wife. Linda assumes their problems are being caused because Andy's afraid of her illness. When Linda confronts Andy about this he lays that worry to rest, assuring her that her sickness has nothing to do with his running from her. He explains that it's because he hasn't been in this situation for a long time and it's hard to get used to. His explanation satisfies Linda and the two continue happily in their relationship.

What's Up With Ephram: Meanwhile, Ephram's experiencing his own relationship issues. The age difference between him and Madison becomes somewhat of a hindrance. Such as when Ephram's unable to get into an 'R' rated movie because he isn't 17 yet. Ephram wants to do things with Madison in public outside the confines of his house but Madison is still weary of people seeing them together. Ephram convinces her to accompany him to the high school's wrestling match and while they are there they run into Ephram's Spanish teacher who also happens to be the same guy who took Madison to her high school prom. Afterwards, they run into Amy and Tommy. While talking to Amy, Ephram noticeably grabs Madison's hand and flaunts it. Later, Madison is thoroughly annoyed because Ephram paraded her around his friends. Being as charming as he is, Ephram's able to apologize to Madison by bringing her pizza and flowers and he accepts it when she says that although she accepts their relationship, she's not ready to deal with people's reaction.
