Episode 20, #21
Original air date: May 5, 2003
The scoop: Andy is faced with a difficult decision when he's asked to help a pregnant girl; when Delia
stumbles upon an old Penthouse magazine, Nina attempts to explain it to her; Ephram goes to a dance with Bright's girlfriend's
cousin.
What's up with Andy: At a local meeting, Andy meets Kate's father who takes him to his horse stable
afterwards. There, he tells Andy about how Kate got wrapped up with Matt, the piano teacher, and how he wound up leaving her
with not only a broken heart but also pregnant. He implores Andy to help Kate by terminating her pregnancy and keeping it
quiet. Andy agrees to meet with Kate the next day. During their meeting Andy asks Kate if she's absolutely sure that she wants
to get an abortion. He informs her about other options she has such as adoption or keeping the baby. Although Kate is sure
her mother couldn't handle knowing about any of this, Andy advises her to think about it for a couple of days before she makes
her decision. Kate's father is furious with Andy for telling Kate that she has options other than abortion but he still wants
Andy to perform it for her. Andy seeks advise from Dr. Harold Abbott who tells him that because Everwood is such a small town
he would be crucified if people found out he performed an abortion. He tells Andy to give Kate the name and address of a clinic
in Denver where she should go for the procedure. Andy doesn't feel comfortable doing that and has Edna order the equipment
needed. On the day the equipment arrives Edna forces Andy to confront his feelings and he tells her that he can't go through
with terminating Kate's pregnancy. He's decided to tell Kate to go to a clinic in Denver but Edna tells him to talk to Harold
again. Harold tells Andy that when his father practiced years ago he saw too many women who needed a reliable place to go
to for an abortion but since they had nowhere to go, they were seriously injured. When Harold went into practice with his
father he promised that he would continue being a safe out-lit for young women in trouble. He tells Andy to bring Kate over
to his office and Harold performs the procedure for her.
What's up with Delia: Delia is helping Nina clean out her attic when she comes across an old Penthouse
magazine. As she looks at it in awe, she asks Nina what it's for. Nina, trying to convey to Delia that she never needs to
be ashamed of her body, explains to her that a lot of men like to look at women's bodies. It just so happens that during this
time Delia is also looking for a birthday present for her little boy friend and she decides to wrap up the magazine and give
it to him. Of course, his mother is shocked and disgusted and Delia doesn't know why. Initially Andy is upset with Nina and
bawls her out for telling Delia what she did, but later decides he should have been the one to talk to Delia about it and
sits her down to have a father/daughter talk.
What's up with Ephram: Bright asks Ephram if he'll bring his
girlfriend's cousin to the dance on Friday night. Ephram reluctantly agrees and ends up being completely ignored by the girl
because she only wanted to go so she could be with another boy. Ephram ends up sitting by himself for most of the dance
What's
up with Amy: until Amy, while dancing with Colin, spots Ephram sitting by himself and tells Colin she's going to go talk
to him. Colin tells her that if she goes over to him she better not come back. Amy's surprised and angry that he would suggest
such a thing but she ignores his comment and sits with Ephram. Realizing that Amy's trying to make a point Ephram asks her
if she'll dance with him and the two dance with Colin looking on.
What's up with Colin: The next day Colin approaches Amy and asks her if she's going to apologize to
him. She explains to him that she's always put Colin ahead of everybody in her life and that Ephram has always been there
for her and encouraged her to stay with Colin. She says that not only has he been a good friend to her but to Colin as well
and then she walks away with Colin looking quizzically after her. When he gets home Colin calls for his mother, wanting to
know what's for dinner. As he calls for her he takes the milk out of the fridge and a glass from the cabinet. Before he gets
a reply the glass smashes on the floor as Colin collapses. His mother walks into the kitchen and finds Colin in convulsions
on the floor.
