Moonlight Sonata, #20 Original air date: April 28, 2003
The scoop: Ephram prepares for his first piano recital in Everwood; the whole town is mystified by
the appearance of mysterious lights in the sky.
What's up with Andy: Andy's eagerly anticipating Ephram's piano
recital since the last one he not only missed, but was the night his wife was killed. He invites a lot of people and then,
trying to please Ephram who keeps changing his mind about whether he wants anyone to go, dis-invites everybody. Finally, on
the night of the recital he rounds up a bunch of people to see Ephram's performance.
What's up with Ephram:
Ephram's piano teacher, Matt, has all of his students practice together before their recital. That's when Ephram meets Kate
who is an extremely talented piano playereven, to Ephram's surprise, as good as him. After hearing her play, Ephram's sure
that Kate will get the highly coveted finale spot in the recital so he decides he doesn't want anybody to come see him play.
He sees Kate at school and mentions to her that she'll surely get the finale. He's surprised when she says that there's no
way Matt would ever give her the finale and it turns out that she's right. Matt seems unusually critical of Kate's ability
and assigns Ephram the finale. During their private lesson Matt tells Ephram that he's leaving Everwood to teach in England.
Ephram's disappointed because Matt's not only his teacher, but a friend and somebody he respects and looks up to. On the night
of the recital Ephram has a gift he wants to give to Matt before the recital begins. He can't find him so he looks around,
opening doors to various rooms. He's stunned when in the last room he finds Matt and Kate locked in a loving embrace. Ephram
is upset, but performs his piece flawlessly and gets a standing ovation. Backstage Kate praises his performance but he brushes
off her compliments claiming that the only reason she didn't get the finale was because Matt didn't want to "blow their cover."
Kate argues that it has nothing to do with it and that she and Matt are in love. She tells him that the reason Matt's leaving
is because her dad found out about them. The next day, Ephram confronts Matt and tells him what a low-life he thinks he is,
messing around with a high school girl. Matt defends himself and tells Ephram that he's always been honest when it came to
his piano playing but Ephram doesn't believe him and is extremely disappointed in the person Matt has turned out to be.
What's
up with Amy: Things are still tense between Amy and her dad and since she came home late one night he grounds her from
seeing Colin. Edna seems to be the only one who understands Amy's feelings so Amy begins to use her grandma in order to talk
to Colin. Meanwhile, mysterious lights have shown up in the skies of Everwood and the town is in frenzy over the excitement
of what the lights could be. Most people think it's aliens and Amy and Edna decide that they will research and find out what
the lights really are. Amy suggests they go camping knowing her dad wouldn't say no to that. As they're heading out to camp,
Amy tells Edna that she's going over Colin's and she'll meet up with her later. Edna gets angry and doesn't let her go. She
does however let her leave their campsite long enough to see Ephram's piano recital (Amy wasn't planning on going until Andy
convinced her because Ephram told her he didn't want her to go). In the morning, Amy and Edna have a heart-to-heart by their
campfire and Edna warns her not to lose herself in her love for Colin. Afterwards, Amy notices millions of moths. She recalls
an article about how hordes of bugs can sometimes get caught in a magnetic field and it can make them glow. They both realize
that the moths are what are causing the mysterious lightsbut they decide to keep it to themselves.
