The Unveiling, #18
Original air date: Feb. 24, 2003

The scoop: Ephram thinks back to the last few days he spent with his mother as the Brown's prepare to travel back to New York to pay tribute to her with a traditional Jewish ceremony; Amy confides in her dad and explodes at him when he hints to Andy that Colin may not be doing as well as everyone thinks.

What's up with Andy: As the year anniversary of Julia's death approaches, Andy notices that Ephram's behavior is changing for the worse: reverting back to the old angry, hostile Ephram. Nina convinces him that it's just the emotion of going back to New York and he'll be back to normal afterwards. When Andy knocks on Ephram's bedroom door to ask if he'll read the traditional Hebrew prayer at the unveiling, Ephram is curt and brief but agrees. Meanwhile, Dr. Abbott mentions to Andy that Colin had been vomiting. Andy pays a visit to Colin and his mom wanting him to go into his office the next day for an examination. Although Colin and his mother feel it's unnecessary they agree. After examining Colin, Andy meets with both of his parent's and strongly suggests that they send Colin to a hospital where he can be monitored 24 hours a day. To Andy's dismay Colin's parents not only disagree with him but they also tell him they no longer want him as Colin's doctor. Andy is thoroughly bothered by their decision, but the mounting tension he's experiencing with Ephram shadows his concern for Colin.

What's up with Ephram: During Ephram's piano lesson his teacher asks him to play a song that Ephram doesn't want to attempt. The teacher's not willing to let him off the hook so Ephram obliges. As he's playing the song that he was to perform at his recital, the night his mother was killed, Ephram begins to have vivid memories of his mother's last days. Andy was supposed to take Ephram out to buy a suit for his recital but according to Julia, he had a seminar to attend in Boston and couldn't make it. In his recollections we learn that Ephram was aware that his parents had been fighting a lot and assumed it was because Andy was never there for any of them. Ephram calls the hotel in Boston where Andy claimed he was staying at and finds out that not only is Andy not at that hotel, but that there's no seminar going on in Boston. Ephram assumes that Andy's cheating on Julia and tells her about his suspicions. She disagrees and defends Andy. Ephram decides to confront Andy about his memories and furiously demands that Andy tell him the truth. Ephram is extremely shocked to learn that Andy had left because he and Julia had been fighting and that it was his mother who had an affair. After Ephram absorbs the news he goes to Andy and apologizes. He realizes that his mother wasn't perfect and perhaps realizing that will help him to accept Andy a little bit more.

What's up with Amy: When Amy hears Colin throwing up in the bathroom she tells her dad in order to calm her worries. After Colin blows up at her for telling, Amy becomes enraged that her dad broke her trust, which has led to Colin not talking to her.

What's up with Colin: Although Colin has been having bouts of nausea, he obviously agrees with his parents that nothing is wrong other than a mere stomach problem. Then Colin catches Laynie packing her bags and asks where she's going. She tells him that she's going back to boarding school because she can't take everybody's denial over Colin's illness. She tells him that everything's going to fall apart soon and she doesn't want to be there when it does. Colin tries to reassure her that everything will be okay but is unable to convince her not to go.
