My Funny Valentine, #16 Original air date: Feb. 10, 2003
The scoop:
Traveling Psychologist, Dr. Gretchen Trot, returns and gives Andy a Valentine's Day gift; Ephram asks Laynie out; Amy admits
to Colin that she and Ephram hooked up.
What's up with Andy: Although one would think that Valentine's Day would be particularly hard for Andy,
he admits to Nina that he rarely celebrated it with Julia, other than having his secretary send her flowers. When he sees
that Dr. Gretchen Trot has returned to Everwood he's pleased and asks if they can set up an appointment. She explains that
she only does couples therapy in February and suggests they have lunch together. Although Andy's expecting no more than a
doctor/patient get-together, Nina tells him that it's a date. Dr. Trot makes reservations at a romantic restaurant just outside
of Everwood and when Andy sees her in a little black dress he realizes that this is more than just an "appointment." He's
extremely jittery and nervous throughout the lunch and apologizes for his behavior afterwards. When Dr. Trot tells him that
she thought about him while she was away he tells her that he didn't think about her in the same way. On Valentine's night
when he sees that even Ephram has a date he begins feeling lonely. He walks over to Dr. Trot's trailer and asks if they can
go somewhere together. While drinking wine together he tells her that he lied when he said he didn't think about her and that
he wishes he could have one night of not feeling guilty and thinking so much about all the different things he should have
done for Julia. Dr. Trot kisses him and the two end up in bed. Afterwards, despite his guilt, Andy leaves. Before Dr. Trot
leaves Everwood Andy visits her, apologizes and suggests they give another date a shot. She declines and then suggests that
he write Julia a letter, writing to her all of his feelings and everything he wishes he could have told her. Dr. Trot tells
him he has to find peace or he'll continue to miss out on life. Andy takes her advice and writes the letter that will hopefully
release him from some of his pain.
What's up with Ephram: Ephram runs into Laynie at the post office and the
two hit it off once again having a "Who Hates Everwood More" contest. Then he accompanies her to her house where Colin and
Amy are hanging out. The next day at school Amy pries at Ephram until he admits he has feelings for Laynie. Amy begins to
advise him on how he should handle it. She tells him he should ask her out after school. Ephram does just that and lands a
date with Laynie on Valentines Day. The four of them (Colin, Amy, Laynie and Ephram) go ice-skating the next night. Ephram
and Laynie have a great time together and he's obviously happy when Laynie kisses him.
What's up with Amy:
On the outside Amy's acting as though she's happy that Ephram and Laynie are hooking up. She even takes that extra step, giving
Ephram advice on how to go about asking Laynie out. At the skating pond on Valentines Day Amy asks Laynie what she thinks
about Ephram. As Laynie explains to Amy all the reasons why she's attracted to him, Amy seems to thoroughly understand. While
she and Colin are sitting together Amy finds herself explaining to Colin what happened between her and Ephram. It's obvious
that she loves Colin but also has strong feelings for Ephram. After Colin leaves for Denver Amy heads over to the skating
pond where she runs into Ephram. The two talk and Amy ends up taking him by the hands to show him how to ice skate.
What's
up with Colin: While at the skating pond Colin notices Amy watching Ephram and Laynie's every move. He confronts Amy demanding
she tell him what went on between her and Ephram while he was in the hospital. When Amy tells him that she and Ephram kissed
twice Colin's obviously hurt and angry. Amy recounts for Colin all of the many hours she spent at his bedside and tells him
that the time she spent with Ephram can't compare. Colin accepts that but tells her she hasn't been able to look at anyone
but Ephram all night. The next day while Colin is packing to go into Denver for tests, Amy comes by and apologizes for not
telling him about Ephram sooner. Colin accepts her apology and tells Amy that he wants her to think about whether she wants
him or not. He tells her that he knows he wants her but he wants her to be sure she has feelings for the Colin he is now,
not the one that she knew before. He assures her that he'll wait for her, the way that she waited for him.
What's
up with the Abbotts: Edna's husband, Irv, has a mild heart attack and Edna becomes overly protective of him. Irv, trying
to lighten Edna up, makes a joke by holding his chest. Edna freaks out and when she realizes Irv was just joking, she leaves.
Harold's wife, Rose, is trying to express her feelings to him and she decides, much to Harold's complete dismay, to make them
an appointment with Dr. Trot. Trying to get Harold to understand proves to be a monumental task and come Valentine's Day,
Rose explodes at his inability to understand her feelings and kicks him out. Since Edna's at the Abbott's house after her
fight with Irv, Harold heads over to spend the night with Irv. The two men realize that they should have treated their wives
differently. Harold recruits the High School marching band to serenade Rose with "their song", softening her up and melting
her like butter. Likewise, Irv apologizes to Edna and the two of them wind up "christening" Dr. Brown's empty office.
