The Price of Fame, #13
Original air date: Jan.20, 2003

The scoop: To Ephram's bewilderment Colin tries to befriend him; Andy's given the lead in Everwood's winter play.

What's up with Andy: When Edna brings her friend Evelyn, who's also the director of Everwood's production of The King and I, over to the Brown's for Poker night, Andy convinces Evelyn to stop by his office so that he can examine her. Evelyn agrees as long as Andy agrees to audition for the play. Upon his examination Andy finds that Evelyn has Leukemia and is startled when Evelyn tells him she already knows. She doesn't want anybody to find out about her illness and makes up a story that she has to go to New York because of a family emergency, allowing her to receive treatment in seclusion. Meanwhile, Edna takes over direction of the play and Andy, to his and Dr. Abbott's dismay, lands the lead role. Edna, having little patience as a director, ends up alienating the cast to the point where everybody wants to quit. Andy visits Evelyn to convince her to come clean with her sickness, assuring her that even though everybody thinks she's infallible, it's okay to admit she's not perfect and that she's seriously ill. In the meantime, he cannot memorize any of his lines and ultimately the role is taken from him and given to Dr. Abbott, who is happy to reclaim his status of lead man in Everwood's play. Andy's much more comfortable in the audience than on the stage and he smiles when Ephram tells him that he's glad to find out that Andy isn't perfect at everything he does.

What's up with Ephram: In the boy's room at school, Ephram runs into Colin who tells him he knows that he's the son of the doctor who saved his life. Afterwards, Colin seems determined to become friends with Ephram. At lunch he saves a seat right next to him for Ephram at the infamous "Popular Table." Before too long, kids that never so much as glanced at him are calling him "E" and saying hello to him. Even Bright makes Ephram his first choice for his team in gym class. Then Amy pays a visit to the Brown's and asks Ephram why he's chumming up with Colin. She angers Ephram when she tells him that he and Colin shouldn't be friends because they have nothing in common. Ephram knows that the only reason all the popular kids are now accepting him is because Colin has taken a liking to him and he believes that the only reason Colin wants to be friends with him is because his dad saved Colin's life. The next day in the school parking lot, Colin offers Ephram a ride home with him and the other kids and Ephram makes it clear that he knows why everybody's finally "accepted" him. He angrily tells everybody to knock it off and go back to ignoring him. He also tells Colin that he's not the one who saved his life so he doesn't have to buddy up to him.

What's up with Amy: When Amy sees Colin and Ephram talking she becomes uneasy with the situation. Worried that Ephram will tell Colin about their kisses, she goes over to his house to make sure that Ephram won't tell him. After Ephram's heated outburst in the parking lot, it's obvious that Amy feels bad and is torn by going after Ephram and staying with Colin.

What's up with Colin:
Colin continues to try to remember his life before the accident but thus far has had no luck. His friends are treating him as though he's just been on a long vacation and is the same Colin they knew before the accident. When he starts acting friendly towards Ephram Bright tries to convince him to leave Ephram alone because he's not a part of their group. Colin tells Bright to treat Ephram as a friend from now on. After Ephram explodes at Colin and the others in the parking lot, Colin approaches Ephram to explain the real reason why he's so determined to become friends. He tells Ephram that he (Ephram) is the only person who didn't know him before and who doesn't expect anything from him. He says that like Ephram, he's the new guy. With that explanation, Ephram understands and accepts Colin.
