Vegetative State, #12
Original air date: Jan.6, 2003
The scoop:
Ephram and Amy deal with Colin's return home; a respected, life long resident of Everwood passes away, leaving the town with
an unexpected surprise in her greenhouse.
What's up with Andy: Nina seeks Andy's advice when her son's pre-school recommends that Sam be put on Ritalin. Andy
disagrees and accompanies Nina to a meeting with Sam's pre-school teacher. After making the point that Ritalin is way over-prescribed
and that a five-year-old should not take it until thoroughly examined, he makes it clear that Sam will not be put on Ritalin.
Nina needs to go to work after the appointment and Andy decides to take Sam so that he can spend some time with him and observe
his behavior. The little kid wreaks havoc upon the Brown's house but ultimately Andy determines that his biggest problem is
that he misses his dad. Meanwhile, when Everwood's town florist since World War II passes away, Andy finds a crop of marijuana
plants in her greenhouse. This sparks a huge town controversy in which Andy finds himself pitted against Dr. Abbott yet again.
What's up with Ephram: With Colin returning home, Andy realizes how difficult this must be for Ephram. He takes
the opportunity to ask him how things are going with Amy and even offers his advise as to how he feels Ephram should deal
with her. Ephram is surprised to see that his dad understands and he takes his dad's advise when he recommends that Ephram
continue to be there for Amy, even if she's not there for him. He decides to attend the Welcome Home party that Amy's throwing
for Colin. After meeting Colin for the first time at the celebration, Ephram heads outside to be alone and finds that somebody
else needed to escape the festivities as well.
What's up with Amy: Amy is enthusiastically planning Colin's return party and can't wait to finally spend time with
him. Although Bright tries to bring her down to earth by explaining that Colin isn't completely recovered yet, Amy refuses
to be brought down. She meets Colin in the park where they can talk alone. When it seems that Colin does remember her she
begins to speak to him as if he's just been on a long vacation and not in a deep coma. She notices Colin looking down at something
in his hand and sees he's written notes about who she is because he has absolutely no memory of her and only knows what he
has been told. Later, at the party Amy goes outside to distance herself from the celebration. Ephram comes over to her and
when she states that Colin's nothing like he used to be, Ephram can't understand why she's unhappy because she has what she's
been yearning for since they met. As he leaves, she asks if she can go with him. During their walking and talking, Amy, obviously
disappointed and frustrated over Colin's recovery (or lack there of it), asks Ephram when she should give up and move on.
Ephram tells her not now; that she's been there for Colin this whole time and now he needs her more than ever. He convinces
her that she has to hang in there and continue to be there for Colin. The next day Amy goes over to Colin's house and tells
him that he'll like her once he gets to know her again. She holds out her hand to Colin and introduces herself.
What's up with Dr. Abbott: Police and the mayor (who also happens to be Dr. Harold Abbott's wife) need to find a
place to store that wacky tobaccy. That place turns out to be the Abbott's kitchen, which thoroughly displeases Harold. Although
it's been proven that the florist was harvesting the marijuana to give to those who needed it for medicinal purposes, Harold
is still disgusted. The town holds a meeting in which to decide if the marijuana should be destroyed or distributed to those
whom it was intended for. A well known resident who's dying of cancer stands up to say that he's been smoking marijuana for
months and that it's given him more time to spend comfortably with his loved ones. Ultimately, it is decided to destroy the
ganja. Later, Harold visits the man dying of cancer to apologize for failing him as a physician and a friend. Harold hands
him a bottle of medication that he claims will help stop his severe discomfort. The man is aghast to see that it's a vile
full of marijuana cigarettes.
Endnotes: Ephram encourages Amy to remain faithful to Colin and convinces her that she must be there for him always,
especially now because Colin needs her more than ever. Does Ephram realize that as he's saying these things, he's doing for
Amy exactly what he's encouraging her to do for Colin?
