Turf Wars, #9
Original air date: Nov. 11, 2002

The scoop: While Ephram and Delia are pleasantly surprised, Andy is uncomfortably caught off guard when Julia's parents from New York, Jacob and Ruth, show up one morning unannounced.

What's up with Andy: Although there doesn't seem to be a great deal of resentment between Andy and his in-laws, he feels uneasy about living up to their standards of parenting and tells Ephram to behave himself while his grandparents are visiting. At his office he explains to Edna that Jacob, like himself, was an extremely successful surgeon, but unlike himself, Jacob was also an extremely successful father. Andy feels dwarfed in his shadow. In an effort to prove himself, Andy suggests to Ephram and Jacob that the three of them attend Everwood's father/son fishing expedition. With Jacob's coaxing, Ephram agrees to go. At the last minute Andy has to visit a patient and Ephram and Jacob end up going without him. Later that afternoon, when Ephram tells Andy about a party he's going to that night, Andy tells him he can't goapparently proving his authority. Jacob strongly disagrees with Andy and tells him that he doesn't have a clue as to how to deal with Ephram. Later that night when the cops bring a drunk Ephram home to a dad, who thought his son was upstairs the whole night, Andy is furious. The next day he finds Ephram and Jacob talking by the fireplace about Ephram moving back to New York and living with his grandparents. Andy's angry and offended, but when Jacob explains to Andy that he (Andy) doesn't understand Ephram, and that he (Jacob) does understand him, it looks as though Andy's beginning to wonder himself, if maybe Ephram would be better off moving back to New York.

What's up with Ephram: Ephram shares a close relationship with his grandfather and enjoys having him around. At the father/son fishing expedition they do a lot of talking and Ephram runs into Bright, who tells Ephram that Amy's going to the party that night and he wants Ephram to be there. Ephram doesn't understand why until Bright explains that he's the only person who can cheer a depressed Amy up. Later, after Andy refuses to let him go, Ephram sneaks out of his bedroom window and goes to the party. When he sees Amy he asks her about Colin and tells her that it may take Colin a long time to recover and that she should move on with her life until he can at least come back to school. Annoyed, Amy tells Ephram that he's the one who should move on and she gets up and walks away. With that Ephram decides to get drunk. Later, while Ephram's relieving himself in the trees, the cops show up and break the party up. When he's brought home drunk by the cops, a shouting match between Ephram and Andy ensues with Ephram giving Andy his usual indifferent, hostile attitude. The next day while shopping with his grandfather, Jacob tells Ephram that he needs to figure out what it is that he wants and then make it happen. Just then they bump into Amy.

What's up with Amy: Amy is determined to spend as much time as she can with Colin. She sleeps at the hospital and is prepared to completely give up her social life. Colin's mom tells Amy that she's putting too much pressure on everybody with her high expectations. She tells Amy that she wants her to go home and not to come back. With Bright's insistence Amy attends the party that night and is happy to see Ephram. When he starts talking about Colin she gets angry and leaves the party. The next day when she bumps into Ephram at the grocery store she asks him how long he stayed at the party. She looks surprised and a bit worried when Ephram tells her, "Long enough to move on" and walks away.

What's up with Delia: Ruth, Delia's grandmother, feels Delia needs to be taught how to be a lady. In contrast, Edna feels Delia needs to learn how to do things for herself, including how to change a tire. Ruth goes along with it but stays her course by introducing lip-gloss and pantyhose to Delia and by taking her to a poetry reading at the diner, which Edna attends with them. At the reading a bored Delia takes off her pantyhose and falls asleep, much to her grandma's dismay. She's worried that Delia will forget about her mother and Edna reassures her by telling her that she (Ruth) just has to make sure to remind her. The next morning Delia and her grandmother make breakfast together as Ruth talks about when Delia's mother was a little girl.

End Notes: It looks like Ephram and Andy are facing a major decision: will Ephram move back to New York to live with his grandparents?
