We Hold These Truths, #7
Original air date: Oct. 28, 2002

The scoop: As Andy operates on Colin, the show flashbacks to the day of the accident through Amy and Bright's thoughts; Bright tells his dad what really happened on the day of his and Colin's accident.

What's up with Andy: Andy has flown one of his best friends and respected colleague, Dr. Brian Holderman, a surgeon from New York, to Everwood to help with Colin's surgery. He tells Brian that he has doubts about performing the surgery, and Brian tells him not to worry that he was meant to fix God's mistakes. Despite some unexpected findings, the surgery goes well and Andy informs Colin's parents and Amy that although they shouldn't expect any changes for the next few weeks, Colin did very well. Afterwards, he sits with Ephram and explains to him that the reason he initially didn't want to do the surgery was because he was afraid of letting everybody down, especially Ephram.

What's up with Ephram: Ephram has decided not to accompany Amy to the hospital while she awaits the outcome of Colin's surgery until Nina comes over and talks to him. When Ephram tells her that Amy doesn't share the same feelings he has, Nina tells him that he needs to think about what kind of a friend he wants to be to her. With that, Ephram surprises Amy, who seems genuinely glad to see him, at the hospital bringing with him a couple of board games to pass the time. After the surgery when Amy goes to see Colin, Ephram spends some quality time with his dad. There's no anger or hostility in Ephram as he seemingly gets the message that Andy cares deeply about how Ephram feels towards him.

What's up with Amy: As Amy waits for Dr. Brown to finish operating on Collin she thinks back to the last day she spent with him. It was the Fourth of July and before Everwood's Fourth of July festival Amy and Collin went swimming at a lake frequented by her, Collin and her brother, Bright. Collin led Amy out onto the edge of a branch of a low tree and together they held hands and jumped into the water below. When the two came up Amy told Collin she loved him and got no response in return. At the festival later that day she catches Colin drinking with Bright and threatens to tell their dad. She confronts Colin as to why he didn't tell her he loved her back, to which Colin told her how much he cared for herbut still no I love you to. Later, she watches as Colin and Bright get into Colin's dad's new pick-up truck and drive off. Amy recounts that story to Ephram and tells him that she doesn't know if Colin loves her and that she doesn't know where she stands with him.

What's up with Bright: Bright is sitting outside at the same lake he, Amy and Colin used to go to. He remembers back to the Fourth of July when he and Colin we're spinning donuts and driving recklessly in a field. Before going back to the festival Colin hands the keys over to Bright and tells him to go for it. They never made it back to the festival. After his recollection Bright goes home and tells his dad that he remembers, and has always remembered, what happened that day. He admits that not only was he driving when the accident happened but he had been drinking as well. As shocked as his dad must be from Bright's revelation, he and Bright drive over to the hospital and tell Colin's parents the truth. Colin's dad is disgusted and unsympathetic, while his mother is more comforting.

End Notes: What will be the consequences of Bright's revelation? What will happen when and if Colin awakes? Either wayeveryone's life is bound to change.
