The Doctor Is In, #6
Original air date: Oct. 21, 2002

The scoop: Andy examines Colin and meets with his parents; Delia suffers a major letdown when Magilla isn't allowed to play with her anymore; a traveling female psychologist (guest star Jane Krakowski, "Ally McBeal") visits and stirs up Everwood, especially Dr. Abbott.

What's up with Andy: After examining Colin, Andy tells Colin's mother and father that although Colin will most likely never regain consciousness, there is an experimental operation that may be performed with their consent. They look to Andy for advice by asking what he would do if it were his own son and Andy surprisingly advises them against going through with the operation. When Harold visits him in his office to try to convince him to rethink his decision, Andy's eyes are opened to the extraordinary talent he has in being a surgeon. He pays a visit to Dr. Trott, a traveling psychologist, who forces him to admit to himself that the reason he made the decision he did is because he was afraid of how Ephram may be affected, because of the friendship and caring he has for Amy. But mostly, he's afraid because the gap between his work and his personal life is getting closer and closer. In New York he was a doctor, in Everwood he's a father, a doctor and a friend.

What's up with Ephram: Ephram is furious with his father for not wanting to perform surgery on Colin, because he knows that it means everything to Amy. He shows deep concern for her and even writes a song on the piano for her. It's evident that his feelings for Amy run much deeper than just friendship and the more Ephram falls for her, the more he wants Colin to be brought out of his comawhich would mean that any chance he has of having a relationship with Amy would be no more. But, it looks as though Ephram realizes that he stands a greater chance of losing her if Colin remains in a coma.

What's up with Delia: Delia goes over to Magilla's house and the two end up playing dress up. Magilla's mom walks in, very disturbed at how they're playing, and tells Delia to go home. When Delia tells her dad that Magilla isn't allowed to play with her anymore he tries to find out why. He and Delia go over to Magilla's house armed with ice cream, only to get the door basically slammed in their faces. The next day, after Delia announces that Magilla has been taken out of school, Edna lets Andy in on the long kept secret that Magilla was born a hermaphrodite, neither a boy nor a girl. Doctors performed surgery and encouraged the parents to raise Magilla as a male. Andy heads over to their house and tries to convince Magilla's mother that pulling Magilla out of public school and enrolling him in an all boy's school is not the answer. To no avail, Delia is forced to say goodbye to the best and only friend she has made in Everwood.

What's up with Dr. Abbott: With the temporary stay of Dr. Trott, Harold is perpetually annoyed. His secretary has met with Dr. Trott and is no longer the wimpy little peon she once was. He also doesn't like the fact that Dr. Trott points out why he feels and reacts to people and situations the way he does, while at the same time she doesn't give him the time of day. We also got a glimpse at why Harold is filled with such animosity towards Andy and Dr. Trott. We are clued in that Harold is extremely dissatisfied with his career when he visits Andy at his office. He reveals that he and Andy went to the same medical school and that he had originally planned to be a surgeon but, unlike Andy, he didn't have innate precision it takes to be a surgeon. Therefore, he returned home to Everwood and continued with his father's practice. It also seems that Harold, while jealous of Andy's ability, also admires it.

End Notes: Amy is extremely sad and beginning to believe that Colin is never coming back to her at the same time that Andy is very possibly rethinking his decision to not operate on him.
