Deer God, #5 Original air date: Oct. 14, 2002
The
scoop: Ephram and Andy hike into the mountains to take a deer back to her home; Delia struggles to understand what makes
people believe in God; Dr. Abbott is thrilled that he's won the Colorado Medical Board's award for Excellence and Dedication
in Medicine; Ephram asks Andy to help Colin.
What's up with Ephram: Ephram becomes attached to a doea deera
female deer that has wandered far from her home and wound up at the Brown's. After finding out that Animal Control will only
bring the deer as far as hunting territory, Ephram decides to bring the deer back to her home by taking her there himself.
After careful planning and mapping out of his destination, he's not thrilled when his dad insists on coming along. After a
night of camping and a day of hiking, the two finally find the spot in the woods where the deer came from. Unfortunately,
they discover that a fire has destroyed all the vegetation, leaving no way for the deer to survive. Ephram comes to the realization
that much like his own life, the deer's has been upended, leaving her no choice but to change location, or die. Ephram cries
in his dad's arms as he yearns for his home in New York and his mom. Afterwards, Ephram and Andy take the deer to a new spot
in the woods where it may be difficult for her to get used to, but where she will undoubtedly become accustomed. Ephram seems
content with the knowledge that even though the deer may not be as happy in her new home, she is still alive and has a chance
to continue livingto survive and eventually be happy.
What's up with Andy: After Andy drives a deer out of their
house, it hangs around their yard refusing to go away. When Andy sees how determined Ephram is to go on an overnight camping
expedition to bring the deer back to where she came from, he insists that he go along to ensure his son's safety. He attempts
to talk to Ephram while hiking but is met by Ephram's usual hostility. While the two sit together in front of a camp fire,
Andy talks more to himself than to Ephram, trying to figure out how it's possible that he saved so many lives being a neurosurgeon
in New York, but in Everwood he continuously makes mistakes with his own life. When the two arrive home after their weekend
in the mountains together, Andy listens as Ephram tells him about Amy's boyfriend Collin.
What's up with Delia:
Delia is confused when her friend Magilla tells her that he doesn't believe in God. She sees that there are similarities between
God and Santa Clause, in that people don't see either of them but they still believe. She starts leaving God cookies and glasses
of water, waiting for a sign that he is real. While Andy and Ephram are camping she stays with Edna who takes her to an Army
base 80 miles away to talk to a recruit who is also a rabbi-in-training. Delia leaves disappointed, having still received
no sign from God. When Edna drops Delia off at home she tells Delia that they had been out of gas for pretty much the whole
ride home and that it's practically a miracle that they made it all the way. Delia happily accepts that as her long awaited
sign from God.
What's up with Amy Abbott: When Amy's dad wins an award for excellence and dedication in the
medical field he recruits Amy to write an article about it for Everwood's town paper. Amy puts off going to Denver to read
to Colin in the hospital in order to help her dad with the project. In talking to her dad he tells her to remember that Colin
was happiest when she was happy and that she needs to keep on living her life. That night Amy tells her dad that she's going
to an annual party, that was a favorite of Colin's, with her friendsseemingly getting on with her life. As she's getting ready,
Ephram shows up at her door and confesses that he lied to her when he told her he'd asked his dad to help Colin. He also tells
her that he has since talked to his dad and tomorrow his dad will be traveling to Denver to examine Colin. Amy utters a small,
"Okay" and softly shuts the door.
