Pilot Episode, #1 Original air date: Sept. 16, 2002
The
scoop: Dr. Andrew Brown is an extremely successful neurosurgeon living in New York City with his wife, Julia and their
two children, 8-year old Delia and 15-year old Ephram. His work is his main priority until his wife is killed in an automobile
accident and he turns his life around by making several extreme changes. One of which, is moving himself and his children
to a small town in Colorado called Everwood.
What's up with Andrew: Andrew is supposed to go to Ephram's piano
recital but as usual gets caught up in work and sends his wife off without him, planning to meet her there. Julia never makes
it to the recital after being involved in a tragic automobile accident that takes her life. Andrew goes back to work at the
hospital soon after the funeral but after seeing his first patient (a man who has terminal brain cancer) he experiences something
of a revelation and tells the man to go to the place he loves most because Andrew cannot do anything for him, other than pro-long
his inevitable death. After that, he leaves his job and New York City to raise his children by himself in the town of his
wife's dreams, Everwood, Colorado. There, as he goes through the difficult process of grieving his wife, he begins the not-so-easy
task of establishing relationships with his children. In addition, he converts an abandoned building into his new doctor's
office, which happens to be across the street from Everwood's town physician of 15 years, Dr. Harold Abbott.
What's
up with Ephram & Delia: 8-year old Delia is adjusting well to her new school but is worried about her dad who she
often sees talking to her mom who is obviously not there. She talks to Irv, her school's bus driver and playground monitor
about her dad's strange behavior. He comforts her by telling her that her dad's suffering from a "distraught heart". Ephram
is having a more difficult time getting used to his surroundings and the resentment he feels towards his father continues
to grow. Fortunately the pretty 15-year-old daughter of Dr. Abbott, Amy, befriends Ephram, giving him someone to talk to.
Unfortunately, Amy's older brother, Bright, isn't happy about their newfound friendship and instigates Ephram by warning him
to stay away from Amy and informing him that she has a boyfriend, which thoroughly upsets Ephram. A fight ensues and their
fathers come to the school to pick them up. When Ephram and his dad arrive home Ephram lets out all of the hostility that
has been building up towards his father and a bitter shouting match takes place, ending with Ephram riding off on his bike.
In the end, it seems as though it did both of them good to get out some of their anger and they sit calmly together as Ephram
plays the piano.
What's up with Dr. Harold Abbott: Dr. Abbott is not happy to have the renowned Dr. Andrew Brown
across the street causing unwanted competition. His hostility only intensifies when Dr. Brown proclaims to that he will be
practicing medicine free of charge to each citizen of Everwood. To make matters worse for Dr. Abbott, his mother Nurse Edna
Harper, goes to work for Dr. Brown across the street.
What's up with Amy Abbott: After her brother tells Ephram
that she has a boyfriend, Amy is forced to explain what her motivation was for starting a friendship with him. She takes Ephram
to a hospital in Denver where her boyfriend (and her brother's best friend) lay in a coma. She reveals that when she heard
the famous Dr. Andrew Brown was coming to live in Everwood she hoped he'd be able to help her boyfriend. Her explanation makes
Ephram feel better and it looks as though they've made amends.
Ending thoughts: Is Ephram going to be able
to maintain just a friendship with Amy now that he knows about her boyfriend? How did the accident that put Amy's boyfriend
and Bright's best friend into a coma affect the all of the Abbotts? Will Andrew manage to heal his relationship with his son
while mending his distraught heart?
