Three Miners From Everwood, #30 Original air date: November
3, 2003
The scoop: Everwood experiences tragedy when the town coal mine collapses. Three of the
miners are seriously injured and need immediate medical attention in order to survive. Andy, Harold and Linda, struggle to
save the lives of the three miners, each of whom have affected the lives of some key Everwood citizens.
What's
up with Ephram: Ephram met Will Cleveland when he went to his house to apologize after slightly denting his car. In order
to avoid having to report the minor infraction (and to avoid Andy's reaction) Ephram opted to help Will by navigating the
Internet so that he could purchase some old jazz records. The two became friendly while appreciating the jazz records and
then playing on the piano themselves. In addition, Will turned out to be a great teacher. Will is one of the miners trapped
in the coalmine, his arm is wedged underneath a huge steal beam. The doctor's seemingly have two options: either let Will
bleed to death or amputate his arm. Luckily, Andy is able to reach underneath the beam and hold the artery that's damaged
until they are able to get Will out.
What's up with Andy: Andy had been trying to help Ellie Beels, an Everwood
coal miner, and her husband, who's Everwood High School's guidance counselor, conceive a child. The couple wasn't having any
luck because of the physical stress Ellie's job put on her. Andy witnessed the couple's distress and how much their plight
was negatively affecting their relationship. Now Ellie is trapped in the coalmine with a steel rod lodged in her stomach.
She's conscious but in a lot of pain. The doctor's have to leave the steel rod in her stomach for now because they don't have
the tools necessary to free her without killing her. After they run out of pain medication, Linda helps to ease Ellie's discomfort
by performing acupuncture on her. Ellie insists that she's fine and tells the doctors to help the others. Unfortunately, she's
been internally bleeding and Andy has to perform an emergency blood transfusion, using her own blood. In addition, Andy's
forced to face his fears after losing Colin, and performs makeshift brain surgery on another mining victim.
What's
up with Harold: Harold had a bit of a rocky relationship with his next-door neighbor, Daniel, when he found out Daniel's
plans to build a lighthouse in his backyard. Harold went to the zoning board to have it stopped, but was stopped when Daniel
showed up at the meeting and explained that he needed to build this lighthouse for his wife, so that he could compensate for
never moving her to a seaside town. Now Daniel's trapped in the coalmine, and facing terminal brain damage. Luckily, Harold
boosts Andy's confidence by reassuring him that he has the skills to perform this emergency brain surgery. He tells Andy to
forget about Colin and just do it. He does, and Daniel is saved.
What's up with Bright: Since Bright was kicked
off the football team, he's been concentrating on getting his grades up. With the help of his guidance counselor, he's been
working on writing a college essay of whom he'd most like to talk to. His guidance counselor is getting terribly frustrated
after being told by Dr. Brown that he and his wife may need to use artificial insemination in order to conceive, then spilling
coffee on his shirt, then getting told by the principal that he won't be able to become a full time employee, then has Amy
call him a bad guy after he catches her cutting class, and now Bright is acting careless and immature. He loses it and yells
at Bright, telling him to get out and talk to him if he needs a recommendation for a job at a gas station. Later, Bright apologizes
to him and tells him that he really does want and need his help. The guidance counselor is happy to sit down and talk to Bright
but he's interrupted by a call with the news about Ellie, his wife. When he gets to the coalmine, Dr. Brown tells him that
Ellie will be okay but that her uterus will have to be removed. At that point all Ellie's husband cares about is that she's
going to be okay.
