The Last Of Summer, #24 Original air date: Sept. 15, 2003 The scoop: It's the end of the summer and the town of Everwood is slowly recovering after Colin Hart's
death; much of the town, especially Amy, blames Dr. Brown; Andy shies away from their silent but obvious accusations.
What's
up with Amy: Although Amy's devastated by Colin's death, she's getting on with her life by resuming her summer job
at the Everwood pool and preparing for her junior year of high school. When Colin's mom asks her to organize the memorial
for Colin, Amy agrees and takes on the task of going through Colin's personal items. Laynie, Colin's sister who's home for
good, brings Amy Colin's computer. As Amy looks through his personal files she finds the letter Colin wrote to Dr. Brown about
discontinuing the surgery if a major complication occurred, thereby ensuring he wouldn't live as a vegetable. Along with her
dad Amy takes the letter to Colin's parents explaining that Dr. Brown didn't do everything he could to save Colin because
of the letter. She's further shocked and distraught when they tell her that they knew about the letter because Colin had discussed
it with them. Later that evening, Amy joins her family to dine at the new restaurant in town but dinner is disrupted for everybody
when she spots Dr. Brown at the next table and confronts him. On the evening of the pool's closing day, Ephram talks to Amy
as they're closing up. He tells her about when his mother died and how he felt. Amy tells Ephram that she can't forgive his
father and that she wishes he wasn't Ephram's dad because every time she looks at him she's reminded of everything. Ephram
tells her that his dad is a good person and that he (Andy) knows how she feels. After Ephram leaves, Amy's alone at the pool
and sees a vision of Colin up on the diving board. She smiles and runs to him as he dives off the board, into the water, and
doesn't come back up. Her face fills with sadness as she folds down the lawn chairs. What's
up with Andy: Ever since Colin's death it's no secret that Andy isn't held in the same regard as before. He's lost
virtually all of his patients and no longer partakes in any socializing in town, including going out to eat or joining Ephram
and Delia at the pool. He too is consumed by Colin's death and the guilt he feels. He remembers back to the surgery when he
stopped the procedure after a crucial vein in Colin's brain was irreparable and second guesses the promise he made to Colin.
After Delia has been affected by the situation, Ephram convinces Andy to stop acting so guilty so that they can all get on
with their lives. That night Andy takes Ephram and Delia and joins Nina at Everwood's new restaurant. Already feeling unwanted
and uncomfortable, they are caught off guard when Amy walks over to confront Andy. Everybody listens as she accuses Andy of
not trying hard enough to save Colin because of the letter. At home later, Andy tells Ephram what happened during the surgery
and about the letter and his promise to Colin. In talking with Ephram, Andy realizes that he must do something about his relationship
with the town. During Amy's speech at Colin's memorial, Andy holding Delia's hand, enters the room and waits for Amy (who
pauses at his entrance and glares at him) to finish. At the podium, through tears, Andy explains his position and afterwards,
looking right at Amy, gives a heartfelt apology for their grief. With that he, Delia and Ephram leave the room.
What's
up with Ephram: Ephram takes a job at the pool during the summer. He's frustrated with Andy's behavior but sympathetic
as well. When he and Amy are closing up the pool together and he realizes that things have changed between them because of
Colin's death, he asks her where the two of them stand and when she says, "We're friends" Ephram seems satisfied.
What's
up with Delia: Delia has finally made friends with a group of girls at the pool. She's happy and almost oblivious
to her dad's dilemma until her little friend dis-invites her to a slumber party because the girl's mom wants nothing to do
with Andy. Although she's upset with Andy, she remains faithful and stands by his side.
